Description
The Haugur Hitch Fly is Sigurdur Hedinn Hardasson’s, or Siggi Haugur’s, familiar Icelandic salmon pattern tied here as a lightweight hitch tube. It keeps the Haugur’s dark wing and modest flash, but is intended to skate on the surface rather than fish below it, this is a useful pattern when a sunk fly is being ignored.
Fish this hitch fly salmon pattern in summer low water, particularly on smaller clear rivers with fish settled in the pools. It is at home on dull, overcast days, though the main advantage is plain to see: the tube leaves a V-shaped wake, and a salmon coming up to inspect it can show its position even when it does not take.
Cast square, or slightly upstream, and let the current draw the Haugur hitch tube across the pool. The aim is a steady, even wake. If it begins skating too quickly or jerking, slow it with a mend or alter the angle of the cast. As a tube fly, it needs a separate tube fly hook in the size you prefer.
Choose the Haugur Hitch 1/2 inch for very low, clear water and shy fish. The Haugur Hitch 3/4 inch carries better where there is more water, a touch of colour, or a ripple on the surface. Both are surface salmon fly options built around the original Icelandic Haugur colour scheme.
