Description
The Xcalak Crawler is a saltwater crab pattern designed for sight-fishing on sand flats and grass beds, particularly effective for permit, bonefish, and redfish. Named after the remote flats village of Xcalak on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, this pattern mimics the natural profile and movement of small swimming and crawling crabs a primary forage species across tropical and subtropical saltwater flats.
The fly features a realistic crab silhouette with splayed rubber legs for natural movement on the drop, and weighted eyes positioned to fish hook-point-up, reducing bottom snags in grass and coral. Mottled tan, olive, and brown colour ways match common flat crab species including swimming crabs and spider crabs. A sparse, low-profile tie allows for quick sinking and a natural presentation in shallow water, available in sizes #2–#6 to match local forage.
Best used for permit on the flats, bonefish, redfish and snook in shallow saltwater environments. Performs in clear shallow water at 1–4 ft depth under calm to moderate wind ideal for sight-casting to tailing or cruising fish.
